Abstract

The world's population has been growing over the past few decades, which has raised concerns about the present food system. How efficiently it will be able to feed the 10 billion people predicted over the next 30 years. Despite the fact that this is challenging, some modifications in the food production and consumption system are required in order to achieve sustainability, minimize food loss and waste or support the transition to a better and more sustainable diet around the world. Difficulties related to these challenges include agriculture practices, overexploitation of marine ecosystems and degradation of land ecosystems, greenhouse gases associated with ruminant livestock and the generation and accumulation of residues. Agro ecological application, the adoption of novel alternative protein sources, the introduction of catch shares in fisheries management systems and the revalorization of food lost waste are some of the solutions that have been suggested in response to these issues. Additionally, other actions such as educating people about healthy diets or creating new food items are required for the change of present bad dietary patterns into healthier ones. In order to feed a growing global population while simultaneously guaranteeing the sustainability of the environment, it is necessary to assess the difficulties and issues that the present food system is experiencing.
